In 1895, the Lumière Brothers filmed "Workers Leaving the Factory". Cinema was born observing an exit: bodies leaving the workspace, a camera that waits, an image that records. From that inaugural gesture, cinema was built as a practice of the gaze.
This short film proposes an inversion. The camera no longer waits: it enters. It accompanies an artist and a group of workers who access an old prison of panoptic architecture. The building, conceived to organize visibility and control, is traversed from within by bodies that work and inhabit the space.
The notion of reversal permeates both the gesture and the form of the film. Just as cinema's foundational movement is inverted (from exit to entrance) the film adopts an inverted temporality that displaces the relationship between process and result, cause and consequence. Cinema stops anticipating and begins to retrace its own steps, interrogating its history and its power of the gaze from within a space designed for surveillance.
